The merciless, summer sun beats down on a burning, Bronx sidewalk. Ignoring the inferno, a young boy , age 9, strides along the street. His focus is mirrored by his swift, tireless steps. Opening the door to Mohegan Comics, the local hobby shop, his gaze is immediately drawn to Junior. Bent with intent over his latest model, Junior nods in acknowledgment, but doesn't take his eyes off his work. With the subtlety of a mouse, little Joseph pulls up an empty milk crate, and noiselessly places himself beside the working man. The concentration in the room is contagious. As the sun crawls across the New York City skyline, Joe will spend his day absorbing the careful movements of his mentor, the swift and precise brush strokes, the unwavering focus. Not a single word is exchanged between them, but the silent conversation is immense.
Sixteen years later, Joseph Ramos steps out of the educational halls and classrooms of the College of Mount St. Vincent, degree in hand. With a B.A. in Business Management, Joseph could not be any more proud of himself. Yet, there is still a nagging feeling in the back of his mind. Thinking back to that warm, summer day, Joe remembers Junior and his models, and nostalgia quickly turns into inspiration. His true calling is as clear as his memories. Art, in all it's forms, is Joe's true passion. Forgoing the technical and boring business world, Joe turns to the inspirational and colorful realm of art. “The mind is clear of anything,” he says. “You can create a masterpiece.”
